Legal Maxims
99 MaximsLegal maxims are concise, well-established statements of legal principle that are treated as self-evidently true — distilled wisdom drawn from centuries of judicial reasoning and general custom.
What makes something a maxim?
A maxim isn't just a catchy phrase — it's a principle so consistently applied by courts over time that it comes to be accepted as part of the common law itself.
Many are in Latin, inherited from Roman law and English legal tradition, and they function as interpretive shortcuts: instead of re-deriving a principle from first cases each time, courts invoke the maxim.
